The DPANN clade is one of the superphylum-level clades of the domain Archaea. Members of the DPANN clade are widely distributed on Earth. In particular, they are often abundant in oligotrophic aquifers, such as subsurface groundwater. In the tree of life, the DPANN clade could be one of the deepest lineages. Therefore, the DPANN clade is of great interest in the fields of microbial ecology and evolution. Culture-independent molecular biological analyses, such as 16S rRNA gene amplicon analysis and shotgun metagenomics, have suggested that there are nearly 1000 species in the DPANN clades. However, only a few of the DPANN archaea have been cultivated so far. Their physiology and ecological significance are poorly understood. All of the cultivated species are obligate symbionts, which require a host organism for their growth. In this talk, I will briefly review the research on DPANN archaea, and present a novel DPANN archaeon, Nanobdella aerobiophila strain MJ1T (= JCM 33616T), that we have been successful in co-cultivation with an aerobic host archaeon Metallosphaera sedula strain MJ1HA (= JCM 33617). Given its ease of cultivation, this species will be widely used as a model organism and will accelerate the study of DPANN archaea.
