[E-11-20] Exploring the great subduction earthquakes by the drilling vessel CHIKYU

A wide variety of earthquakes, including slow to catastrophic earthquakes, occur along subduction plate boundaries. The scientific ocean drilling has explored the mechanisms underlying the generation of such earthquakes by drilling directly into the plate boundary faults. The lecture will present the major results of the Japan Trench Fast Drilling Project (JFAST) and Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (NanTroSEIZE) by the drilling vessel Chikyu, as well as future prospects.
