[G02-P02] Gap between disaster prevention and disaster prevention education
- Removing barriers to risk communication

*Hitoshi Nakai1 (1.Kobuchisawa Research Institute for Nature and Education)

Keywords:disaster prevention education, risk communication, sediment disaster, flood, long-term earthquake assessment

Hazard maps play an important role as a gateway to disaster prevention education for adults and schoolchildren. However, since the disaster prevention experts who create hazard maps are accustomed to communicating within their fields of expertise, the general public may not be able to fully understand what they are saying. In addition, since hazard maps are created based on common national standards, they may use illustrations that do not match the conditions in specific areas. Lecturers and teachers who conduct disaster prevention education are required to bridge this communication gap between experts and the general public as well as explaining hazard maps in layman’s terms.
In this talk, the author identifies these communication gaps and proposes ways to teach disaster prevention that facilitates better understanding in the following three areas:
1. How to explain sediment disaster risk areas;
2. How to explain "flood" and role of dams; and
3. How to explain long-term earthquake assessment.
