[HCG19-P03] A research on the relationship between visibility of linguistic landscape and image evaluation in shopping arcade
Keywords:linguistic landscape, landscape evaluation, color investigation
Shopping streets are well connected to our daily lives. The "linguistic landscape" is considered a very important landscape composition as a special element of the streetscape. In recent years, studies on the design of signboards have become popular, but there have been few studies on the overall landscape image evaluation of streetscapes and town colors, with a focus on signboards. This research aims to explore the sequence and design method of streetscapes based on the visibility and image evaluation of "language landscapes" (especially signs) in shopping districts, and can clarify the history of the city and the social and linguistic changes of mankind, but more importantly, using this as a medium, what impact do streetscapes have on us? This will help us to design a better living environment.
The results show that people prefer shopping streets with and without linguistic landscapes. The richness and clarity of the linguistic landscape enhances the aesthetics and personality of the shopping district. Linguistic landscapes with simple key colors enhance the harmony of the shopping area. Looking at the differences in the percentage of signage, a shopping district with a low percentage of linguistic landscapes would increase interest in youthfulness, glamor, and comfort, while at the same time increasing the percentage of linguistic landscapes, interest in vitality, openness, and multiculturalism would also increase. A low percentage of linguistic landscapes is perceived as youthful, pleasant, and harmonious. Conversely, when the percentage of linguistic landscapes is high, people perceive a sense of openness, vitality, individuality, and multiculturalism. Furthermore, a medium percentage of linguistic landscape is perceived as more attractive. Regarding sign colors, signs with a percentage of less than 15% and those with a percentage of 30% or more are more colorful than those with a percentage of 15% to 30%.
Regarding the advice to change the unfavorable impression of visitors to Hyakuninmachi and increase the town's image and visibility, 1. Reduce the "highly saturated colors" and "number of colors" of sign colors and select colors according to local characteristics, based on consideration for the surrounding environment. 2. The size of freestanding billboards should not obstruct pedestrian traffic and visibility. 3. Reduce the number, width and height of billboards. Reducing the number of billboards will increase visibility. A sense of unity can be created by determining the position and size of signs. Set an upper limit to the display area of a single sign. Utilize displays of three-dimensional letters such as cut-out letters. The use of 3D letters helps to create a townscape atmosphere.
