[HCG23-P03] Observational Evidence of anomalous heat extremes over Africa: Need for Statistical downscaling for Urban climate adaptation
Keywords:Heat Extremes, Climate adaptation, Statistical downscaling
Our research provides observational evidence of rising anomalous heat extremes over African subregions. These potentially deadly heat extremes interacting with urban population expansion could drastically increase in future climates. It is critical to examine the potential biases of statistically downscaled climate information to understand and quantify the hazards that a changing environment poses to a growing population. As a first step, our research establishes a preliminary baseline for further investigation into the potential benefits of statistical downscaling and the provision of decision-relevant metrics for stakeholders facing modeling choices that necessitate negotiating trade-offs in projection confidence and risk assessment.
