Establishing sustainable food production technologies is necessary for sustaining human life in closed systems for extended periods away from Earth. Resource cycling technologies are needed to efficiently convert inorganic resources required for plant-based food production, such as nutrients and carbon dioxide, from waste biomass generated within the closed system to achieve this. The degradation of biomass and the utilization of resulting nutrients by plants through soil microorganisms are natural processes applicable to closed ecological systems in space. However, in small closed systems such as spacecraft, saving space requires achieving fast and efficient material conversion reactions. Yet, the resource recovery rate and reaction rate in microbial processing is fundamentally in trade-off relationships. Technology for completely and rapidly processing organic waste into plant nutrients still needs to be established. This presentation discusses these challenges, focusing on the nitrogen cycle in closed systems.
