The sustainable society requires the coexistence of humans and the natural environment. In human history, the Jomon period can be regarded as the period in which humans made the slightest modification of the environment and lived in the greatest coexistence with the surrounding environment. In this study, we investigated the influence of the surrounding water resources on the location of Jomon-period settlements in southern Yatsugatake Mountain to find out how humans and the surrounding environment coexisted during this relatively primitive period. The currently discovered dwelling sites were located less than 1 km from a river. A significant positive correlation was found between the number of dwellings at the sites and the bicarbonate ion concentration of the nearest spring. Therefore, it is thought that stable water resources were necessary for the location and growth of settlements.
