[HDS05-P14] A new reletionship for rate-dependent behaviors of geomaterials in pre-failure stage based on laboratory tests

The rate-dependent behaviors in pre-failure stage is the requisite to understanding and unraveling the failure law and essential for failure estimations. However, the characterizations of rate-dependent behaviors in pre-failure stage are rarely systematically examined.Considering this context, a series of laboratory tests were performed using soils and rocks to replicate the failure mechanism of landslide materials, and investigate the influences of different factors, such as the loading conditions, on the pre-failure rate-dependent deformations.Based on the test results, trimodal phases were indicated in the development of deformation and its derivatives(strain rates and inverse strain rates) against time. Further, the results also indicate that transition in inverse strain rate against time with growth of loads were implied. In addition, different trends were illustrated in the relation between strain rates and remaining life span, implicating that the current failure prediction methods are not applicable for the failures induced by seismic loads. Finally, a new relation between failure strains and strain rates at rupture was proposed based on the test results. This study can offer the essential references to a better understanding of material failure related to varying stress conditions, and contribute to the promotion of effective failure estimation in laboratory and field events.
