[HDS06-P03] Development and improvement direction of Tsunami Detection System for real-time tsunami monitoring and notification process
Keywords:tsunami, tsunami detection algorithm, tsunami detection index
To monitor tsunamis and release tsunami disaster warnings, The Korea Meteorological Administration has developed and operated Tsunami Detection System that can be applied to real-time tidal station, surge-gauge, and coastal long wave monitoring system data in 2021. When earthquake-generated tsunami with a magnitude of 6.0 or greater, the system switches from standard to event mode reporting. Tsunami detection algorithm of the developed system consists of four algorithms; DART, IS, CF, and TIDE. The four algorithms determine tsunami detection index (TDI) based on the threshold of algorithms for each station, produce and notify tsunami observation information depending on the degree of TDI.
We estimated whether tsunami waves reached Korea using Tsunami Detection System caused by the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcanic eruption on 14 January 2022 (KST). As a result of analyzing the arrival time of the tsunami wave, Tsunami Detection System was analyzed to have high tsunami signal detection performance and detection accuracy. In order to advance the tsunami detection system, we intend to improve the quality of observation data through a pre-processing algorithm and the accuracy of tsunami detection by reinforcing new detection algorithms.
