[HDS07-06] Characteristics of the literacy education for volcanic disaster reduction in Mt. Ontake area from comparative study with other volcanic areas

After the eruption in 2014, the volcano disaster management in Ontake area was discussed at workshops in the project “Development of problem-solution methods in volcano disaster management as a methodological application of clinical environmental studies (clinical volcano disaster management) (1-3)”. And Nagano Prefecture also constitute Volcano Disaster Prevention Study Group (Nagano-ken kazan bosai no arikata kentoukai) (4) to establish the Volcano Meister System and two visitor centers.
The Ontakesan Volcano Meister is responsible for effective spreading and enlightening of knowledge about volcanoes and volcano disaster management in the area around Mt. Ontake, and promotes the interest to the Kiso region that coexists with volcanoes (5-7). Currently (February 2023), 18 meisters are engaged and actively involved in volcano meister activities such as enlightenment activities for safe mountain climbing, outdoor study sessions, volcano model experiment for local elementary school students (8), questionnaires for climbers.
In addition to Mt. Usu, Mt. Bandai, Mt. Unzen and Sakurajima areas surveyed by last year (9, 10), we made interview surveys in Mt. Aso, Mt. Fuji and Hakone volcano area with representatives of the facilities that are bases for volcano disaster management education and geopark activities. The main survey subjects are their role and validity in volcano disaster management and tourism, the communication with volcano researchers, local government, residents, tourists, children, how to utilize facilities, and local people’s awareness of volcanoes. The characteristic of Ontake area is that the meisters, volcano laboratory staff and local government representative hold regular meetings. It is advantage for their face-to-face communication and rapid transmission of volcanic information.
