Heavy rainfall and strong earthquakes cause large mass movement, forming a landslide dam. Most landslide dams fail within a year of formation, triggering enormous outburst floods. Flood risk management thus requires techniques that can predict a flood discharge due to a landslide dam failure.

This lecture will commence by presenting a comprehensive overview of the predictive methodology for the outburst flood of a landslide dam. Subsequently, I will present our outcomes of field experiments on a landslide dam failure. These findings will provide us with the direction of future advancements in landslide dam research. Finally, I will highlight our recent efforts in developing a prediction method for landslide dams composed of heterogeneous materials.
