[HGG01-P02] Classroom practices for primary school students using local bamboo forest

During the past half century, the abandoned bamboo forest, which frequently intrudes into other types of land use, has expanded due to some social factors such as the decline of rural population and agricultural workers in Japan. We have created the environmental education programs serving bamboo experience to younger generation as an assistance for solution of the problems caused by the abandoned bamboo forest. This presentation reports an example of the programs practiced for fourth grade students in a primary school of Osaki-city, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.
From late September to early November in 2022, the students cut and gathered bamboo from a bamboo forest near their school by themselves, and made musical instruments from it. They played the original composition by the self-made bamboo instruments at the school play and local festival. The used bamboo instruments became the ingredients for making charcoal named “recycled bamboo charcoal”. The students sold the bamboo charcoal to the school staffs for raising expenses of 1/2 coming-of-age ceremony.
Through the above series of the activities, the students have shown remarkable development in sensitiveness to sound, observation power for material, and ability to make plans. Some positive evaluations were expressed to storyline of the activities and playing music by the self-made bamboo instruments from the parents and school staffs.
