[HSC04-P05] An Ethical Framework for Climate Intervention Research and Potential Scaling

*Janice Lachance1, Billy M Williams1, Randy W. Fiser1 (1.American Geophysical Union)

Keywords:Climate intervention, Science ethics, climate solutions

Geosciences in Japan are on frontlines of the climate crisis. While governments and organizations mobilize, scientific organizations and technology ventures are taking matters in their own hands with climate intervention research often being proposed with large scale testing in Japan and throughout Asia. This presentation will present the preliminary efforts of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and a proposed Ethical Framework for Climate Intervention. The Framework is designed to guide governments, researchers, NGOs, and the private sector. The presentation will discuss an understanding of the benefits and impacts of climate intervention measures, including carbon dioxide removal and solar radiation management, and the need for global transparency, ethical and inclusion practices and robust governance and oversight structures.
