[HTT14-04] Assessing Drought Factors in Morocco through Remote Sensing and Machine Learning Techniques

*Ahmed Derdouri1, Yuji Murayama1, Takehiro Morimoto1 (1.Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Tsukuba)

Keywords:drought, driving factors, climate change, Morocco

Drought is a persistent challenge for the Moroccan economy, especially for the rain-dependent agricultural sector, which accounts for 15% of the GDP and 40% of employment. Despite the recurrence of drought events across the country in recent years, their impacts on crop yields and hydrometeorological conditions vary significantly. This study employs advanced machine learning modeling and remote sensing techniques to analyze the relationship between drought and its potential factors, such as precipitation and evapotranspiration, over the past years. By quantifying the influence of these factors on drought events, this study aims to provide useful insights into optimal drought monitoring and management practices. The findings from this research can inform policymakers and stakeholders in the agriculture and water resources sectors in Morocco to develop effective strategies for drought risk reduction and adaptation.
