[MIS03-03] Requirements of planetary protection in space exploration missions
キーワード:planetary protection、space exploration missions、bioburden
Planetary protection is the activity to prevent both forward and backward contaminations in space exploration missions. The Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) requests to follow the planetary protection policy. The policy defines five different categories according to mission design. Missions to Mars, Europa, and Enceladus are classified as Category III (flyby and orbiter), IV (lander and rover), or V (return to Earth), and missions in category IV and some cases of III and V need the bioburden reduction (below 30~500,000 spores). In this presentation, we will share the basic information of planetary protection and present experimental results of microbial sterilization related to the category IV missions.
