This contribution presents the early implementation and experimentation stage of the European project WATERISKULT (https://wateriskult.geoscienze.unipd.it), which deals with the assessment of the climate change risk to underwater cultural heritage, with a focus on archaeological stone materials. The past and future vulnerability of submarine cultural assets is evaluated here by a mixed field and laboratory experimentation. The current observed decay is explored by the analysis of historical stone materials in selected underwater archaeological sites of the Mediterranean Sea, stressing the connection among deterioration patterns and different material properties and environmental settings. On the other hand, the future expected decay is investigated by monitoring experiments for the quantification of stone weathering in both natural and laboratory controlled environments, considering chiefly the dynamics and effects of seawater acidification and extreme weather events. WATERISKULT aims at promoting the protection of underwater cultural heritage and raise public awareness of the diverse impacts of climate change.
