[MIS06-09] ULAT project completed: Extreme weather monitoring system development in the Philippines
Keywords:ULAT, SATREPS, Philippines, extrem weather
In this projects, we apply two technologies, 1) the lightning activity monitoring with the ground-based lightning networks with 12 and 5 sites for VLF radio wave measurement in nation-wide of Philippines and in a broad typhoon active area, respectively, and with 50 sites for electrostatic field measurement in Metro Manila together with infrasound sensor and automatic weather station, and 2) the 3 dimensional capturing of thunderstorms by on-demand operation of 50-kg micro-satellites. ULAT project was started in 2017 and completed 2023 March after 1 year extension due to COVID. The installation of the ground stations was almost completed by about 90 percent of the original plan and the continuous recording was started. About satellite observation, we succeeded in making detailed 3-D cloud structure model with a resolution of ~100 m near the center of typhoon with micro-satellite, based on information on typhoon eye location within ~1 day. In this presentation, we would review our achievement and scientific results, and introduce the future scope for sustainable maintenance and management of the system.
