I present some recent advances in subaqueous landslide-gravity flow dynamics and their consequences. The 2018 Indonesia Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami disasters, which resulted in more than 4,000 fatalities, were indeed cascading disasters that involved the phenomena of liquefaction, coastal and submarine landslides, and multiple tsunamis. The multi-phased physics and multiple mechanisms are the key for a better integrated understanding of the impact of liquefied gravity flows on tsunami generation. Recent advances, the current states, and challenges in understanding and reducing the disaster risk of landslide-induced tsunamis are highlighted based on the global panel discussion in the World Landslide Forum. Finally, I share a new initiative, Progress in Landslide Research and Technology, for practical applications and the benefit for the society to globally promote understanding and reducing cascading multi-geohazard risks pertaining to landslide-gravity flow dynamics.
