[MIS09-P07] Bioelectricity Measurements at Petroleum Contaminated Groundwater Remediation Sites and in a Groundwater Mesocosm

*Ned Murphy1 (1.Central Planet Repair, LLC)

Keywords:Mesocosm, Bioelectricity

Two decades of accumulated measurements of petroleum concentrations, Oxidation-Reduction Potential, and electrical conductivity provide insight into the distribution of bioelectricity within aquifers containing variable native groundwater composition and variable petroleum concentrations from releases into the environment. This information is combined with the measurements from controlled conditions within the CPR Groundwater Mesocosm.

The carbon within petroleum provides a source of electrons for microbial metabolism of the constituents which decreases the concentrations over time. The metabolism rates can be increased to accelerate the petroleum degradation in the groundwater by managing the subsurface concentrations of electron acceptor compounds. This inquiry was conducted to evaluate the applications for monitoring hydrocarbon plume degradation and whether the electrons can be harvested in the manner of microbial fuel cells used for anaerobic treatment of wastewater.

The CPR Groundwater Mesocosm is also used to measure the relationships under controlled conditions and evaluate methods for improving the understanding of these bioelectrical relationships in the subsurface environment.
