The area variation of perennial snow patches is a good indicator of short-term climatic changes (Higuchi, 1969). Therefore, monitoring the distribution and the area variation of perennial snow patches is important for understanding the changes in the mountain environment.
In this study, we created an inventory of glaciers and perennial snow patches in the northern Japanese Alps at the end of the snowmelt season from satellite images during 2016-2022. The areas of glaciers and perennial snow patches were deciphered using PlanetScope satellite images (3m resolution) from October 2017 to October 2022, and polygon data were created in ArcGIS Pro.
As a result, a large interannual variation was observed in the number and area of glaciers and perennial snow patches in the northern Japanese Alps. Moreover, the area of the perennial snow patches during observation years showed a similar trend to that of the mass balance of glaciers in Arie (2022).
