[MIS21-P01] Development of an effective method of geological surveys for volcanoes on extraterrestrial bodies 2
Keywords:outcrop, field work, exploration
At present, many surface explorations using landers and rovers are being planned and executed on the Moon and Mars. In addition, preparations are underway for the first crewed lunar explorations since the Apollo programs in 1960-70s, including the NASA-led Artemis program in which Japan participates, and China's International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) concept. Under these circumstances, outcrop surveys, which are the basis of geology will be apparently accelataed through uncrewed and crewed lunar and Martian surface exploration. However, there are many differences between Moon-Mars and terrestrial volcanic outcrop surveys in terms of time and accessibility. In the future, outcrop surveys will need to be more efficient (speedy, accurate, and automated). Therefore,we aim to develop an in-situ survey method for (vocanic) outcrops as the following processes: 1) sorting and classifying the judgment process for surface structures of outcrops with standard criteria of geologists; 2) developing a series of algorithms that automatically classify lithological texture features of outcrop surfaces, detect characteristic geological structures for them, and create cross-sectional diagrams of strata; 3) applying, verifying, and revising the algorithms in actual outcrops. Lithofacies judgments are made with portable electronic devices that are equipped with algorithms, which can then be visualized on electronic devices. As a result, various lithofacies will be determined immediately in the field, and new data that are desired to be obtained will be identified. The results of this research will make it possible to improve the efficiency of various on-the-spot curation work even in outcrops where manual reconnaissance is difficult.
