Keywords:Ancient place names, Long sustaining area, Local assessment

In this presentation, the sites where production and living have been sustained over thousands of years are named MILLENNIUM VILLAGES, and we presented a methodology for grasping the candidate sites. It is based on the past research that village names recorded in were compared with current location and then verified. The specific locations have been plotted in a spatial map, a comprehensive and objective grasp becomes possible. There are around 2000 candidates of Millennium Village. The results have been widely analyzed and the preference of the site selection has been found. In addition, we are working on certification for the sustainability of the current identified areas in the future.

Hypotheses and place names for the discovery of MILLENNIUM VILLAGES
Considering the economical foundation, production and disaster prevention capacity under conceivable pressures from environment and society, assumptions about holding a sustainable system in areas where historical characteristics have been maintained consistently in a long period is valid. In this presentation, areas which retained these characteristics and lasted for millennia were named as MILLENNIUM VILLAGES. To show the number of them in an objective way, we used as a keyword and focused on comparing the current names recorded in Heian Period literature, WAMYÔ RUIJU SHÔ, with the past names.

Plotting of research results of town names described in Heian period literature
From the description of KADOKAWA NIHON CHIMEI JITEN, which is one of the most comprehensive books on the current place name, current locations were compared with the village names recorded in the WAMYÔ RUIJU SHÔ and finally determined. And we present the method and significance of elaborately selecting place names that can be plotted at the specific current locations. Besides, we set a long-term sustainable area, which can be considered as a survey unit, as "Ôaza". From the categories with high accuracy and numerous comparisons in KADOKAWA NIHON CHIMEI JITEN, place names that can fit the Ôaza area were extracted as candidate sites of MILLENNIUM VILLAGES. As a result, 1977 place names were obtained from the 4200 townships recorded in WAMYÔ RUIJU SHÔ.
The work enabled us to conduct multilayer analysis through various maps, so that we could obtain a comprehensive result on the general distribution of the MILLENNIUM VILLAGES candidate sites. Viewing from the topography and water system, as a general preference of MILLENNIUM VILLAGES’ site selection, there are diverse landforms and geologies and basic environmental conditions for production and life such as water source. It is also found that land use, such as suitable paddy fields, fields, satoyama and residential districts, is possible in the area.

For further sustainability of MILLENNIUM VILLAGES
The uses the results of this survey to discover and reward regions in Japan that have excellent environments regarding long-term sustainability. The method is to visit the area actualy using the candidate sites of MILLENNIUM VILLAGES as a database and confirm the current situation and historical events of the area. Through this confirmation work, the candidate site will become a certified MILLENNIUM VILLAGES. In recent years, it has shifted to certification in response to confirmation applications from local communities, and has been working as a certification organization that respects the initiative of local communities.
