Keywords:geopark, Sado-island, mine, geotourism
The Sado Gold and Silver Mines are designated as a national historic site and as one of the sites of the Sado Island Geopark. This gold and silver mine site is representative of Japan’s modern and early modern period in mining history, and some of the tunnels are open to the public.
Until now, Sado Geopark guides have not had the opportunity to guide visitors through the tunnels. However, with the cooperation of Golden Sado Co., Ltd., administrator of the tunnels, Geopark guides and the World Heritage Promotion Division of Sado City conducted the first guided tours of the tunnels.
Monitor tours were conducted for three days in March 2022. A total of 51 people in 23 groups participated in the tours. Participants included those who made reservations in advance and those who joined on the day of the tour.
In the questionnaire given to the participants, approximately 90 % of the respondents indicated that the tour exceeded their expectations. Approximately 60 % of the respondents had visited the tunnels in the past. All of these respondents indicated that they were more satisfied with their visit to the mines with the guided tour than their previous visit by themselves. This indicates that the guided tours are enjoyable even for guests who have visited the site previously.
In this presentation, we will explain the preparations taken in this project, share how we guided visitors and the issues involved, and discuss future prospects for further development of the guided tours.
