[MZZ43-P16] The scars of the Katsuyama heavy rain on August 4, 2022 and utilization of them to educational activities
Keywords:Katsuyama, Disaster Reduction, Natural Disaster
The Dinosaur Valley Fukui Katsuyama Geopark covers the entire area of Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, Japan. The Kuzuryu River flows through the center of the area, and the plain area is composed of the alluvial fans formed by some tributaries that flowed from the surrounding 1,000m-class mountains.
In Fukui Prefecture, from August 4 to 5, 2022, the atmospheric conditions became unstable due to the influence of the front, the warm and moist air that flowed into it, and the cold air in the upper air, and intermittent torrential rainfall was recorded. In the Okuetsu region where Katsuyama City is located, intense rain continued to fall in the same area before noon on the 4th. In Katsuyama, the rainfall was especially heavy in the northern mountains, causing damage to the levees of the Kuremi, Takinami, Notsumata, and Sara River, which flowed into the Kuzuryu River from the north, and the occurrence of debris flows in the mountainous area. As a result, 62 buidings were flooded above or below the floor level. In addition, roads were cut off by landslides in various parts of the city, and some villages and lodging facilities were temporarily isolated.
As of Feburary 1st, there are several geo-sites that cannot be visited because of the disaster. In particular, the dinosaur fossil excavation site, which is designated as a national natural monument, is inaccessible because the forest road has been cut off. The bus tour to vist this place, conducted by the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, did not resume during this season.
In this presentation, we will report on the damage caused by the August 4, 2022 torrential rainfall and its impact on the subsequent activities in the Geopark.
