[O06-P15] Collection of microplastics in Genpei River and comparison with surrounding rivers

In recent years ,the shift away from plastics has been taking place in a variety of settings,
One of the reasons for this is to prevent the release of microplastics into the ocean ,which can have a negative impact on marine life and ultimately ,on human beings. This study was initiated to investigate the amount of microplastics in the Genpei River ,which flows through Mishima City and is famous for its clear water ,and to compare it with other rivers in order to consider ways to prevent micloplastics pollution.
We surveyed seven rivers ,including the Genpei River.
We first hypothesized that the amount of microplastics would be proportional to the river basin population. However ,we found that this hypothesis was contradicted by the fact that the Genpei River ,which has a large watershed population ,has a large amount of microplastics ,while the Kano River ,which has a small population ,has a large amount of microplastics detected.
Next we wondered if the amount of microplastics might be related to the amount of domestic wastewater entering the river. So we checked with city hall and found that the amount of domestic wastewater entering rivers with high levels of microplastics was high ,while the amount of domestic wastewater entering rivers with low levels of microplastics was high.
Therefore ,to prevent the inflow of microplastics into rivers ,the amount of domestic wastewater entering rivers should be reduced ,and we thought that this problem could be solved through the development of sewage systems by local governments.
