[O06-P61] The Science of Floating Island Phenomenon IV - Conditions and Principles of Occurrence Verified by Reproduction
Keywords: Floating island phenomenon, mirage, reproduction experiment
The floating island phenomenon is a subordinate mirage caused by the refraction of light and can be seen when conditions such as a difference in air and sea water temperatures and a low observation point are met. This year, we will clarify the conditions and principles of the occurrence of floating islands. We will attempt to reproduce the floating island phenomenon. The purpose of this research was to verify the conditions for the occurrence of floating islands, which were considered based on previous observations. We succeeded in reproducing the floating island phenomenon using a silicon rubber heater. From the experiment, it was found that there is a temperature difference between air and sea water temperatures, that the height of the observation point is low, and that a distance of about 10 km is necessary for the occurrence of the floating island phenomenon.
