[O06-P66] Utilization of pottery clay from rock weathering layer (corresponding to C horizon)

The Sagano High School Woods for Field Studies (hereafter referred to as the "school forest") has a history of pottery clay being collected in the past. In addition, it has a clayey soil known locally as "Akatsuchi-yama" (meaning "red clay mountain"). The school collects this soil and uses it as pottery clay, but the low plasticity of the clay has been identified as a challenge. The purpose of this study is to clarify the physical and chemical properties of the soil through field surveys and analyses in laboratories, and to consider appropriate processing methods. The results of the field survey showed that soil texture was classified as heavy clay soil, but it was thought to have a small proportion of fine clay particles. In addition, the soil color was judged to be between 10Y and 2.5YR, indicating a strong reddish hue due to iron. The presentation will also include a comparison of the school forest's soil with commercially available pottery clay and pure clay, as well as the effects of iron removal.
