[O06-P75] Emission of rubber granulate and pile into the environment from artificial turf fields

*Kaoru Tsunemi1 (1. Meikei High School)

Keywords:Plastic, Artificial turf, Ocean spill

Previous studies have pointed to artificial turf pile and rubber chips as plastics that are harmful to rivers and oceans. However, few domestic studies have quantified the emissions of artificial turf into the environment. Therefore, this study investigates the emissions of artificial turf from a school ground and presents appropriate methods for reducing runoff. First, we estimated the runoff flow of pile and rubber chips from the ground with reference to previous overseas studies. Next, we visited the demonstration field of a rubber industry company to identify several measures to prevent artificial turf runoff. In addition, we investigated the pile and rubber chip accumulation in the drainage ditches around the ground. From the above, we were able to create a flow for reducing artificial turf discharge by installing barriers in drainage ditches.
