[O06-P81] Subsurface Geology of Beppu Onsen - Inferred from the Formation Process of Acid Springs Based on the Concentration of Iron Ions -

*Hina Sakurai1 (1. Ichikawagakuen Ichikawa high school)

Keywords:Beppu Onsen, Volcanic Type Hot Spring, Iron Ion

We conducted experiments to clarify the subsurface geology of Beppu Onsen. We investigated the conditions under which iron ions are leached from volcanic rocks by experimentation, and discussed by reproducing the formation process of acidic springs. The leaching of iron ions from the rocks into the hot spring water does not take place under neutral conditions, since the leaching of iron ions from basalt was almost nonexistent in pure water, but was active under acidic sulfate conditions. When the solvent is acidic sulfate, higher water temperatures elute more iron ions in 1 atm. Additionally, the concentration of iron ions leached from basalt is independent of residence time and can be considered to be influenced by groundwater liquid (solvent), geology (solute), and pressure conditions.
