キーワード:Whole Atmosphere Model, Satellite Drag, Low-Earth Orbit Satellites
The Whole Atmosphere Model-Ionosphere Plasmasphere Electrodynamics (WAM-IPE) Forecast System (WFS) is an operational model at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), developed at the NOAA/NWS Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). With recent increases in solar activity through solar cycle 25, the impact of space weather on Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites has become more apparent. SWPC has begun engaging with LEO satellite operators, and is developing products and preparing to make significant strides in the timeliness of data availability in support of their operational needs. In this talk, we will introduce our current and future capabilities relevant to such customers, highlighting the use of WAM-IPE in providing both nowcast and forecast specification of the neutral atmosphere up to 1000km. In particular, the SpaceX Starlink satellite loss event in Feb 2022 will be discussed.
