[SIT16-P01] Waveform inversion for 3-D S-velocity structure in the mantle transition zone beneath the Northwestern Pacific

The mantle transition zone (MTZ), located between the upper and lower mantle, plays an important role in the exchange of heat and materials between these regions. Furthermore, beneath Japan, subducted Pacific slabs are thought to stagnate near the MTZ. Understanding the structure in this region will provide clues to constrain thermal and chemical evolution in the mantle regions.
In this study, we aim to estimate the S-wave structure of the mantle transition zone using waveform inversion. The target region is the mantle transition zone beneath the Northwestern Pacific, specifically, the 350-700 km depth region between latitude 0-50° and longitude 115-150°. We will present the results of resolving this region using waveform inversion and discuss the resolved S-wave velocity structure.
