Moving into 21st century, human society has confronted various dilemmas to remain as functional as it was before. This has been recognized as a result of being rapidly developed in the past decades. The Earth environment, i.e., the resource base, has been overused down to a situation being hardly recovered. The sustainability for both of our mother Earth and societal systems came to be questioned and therefore widely discussed. To find the solutions the task force organized by United Nation published the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is also known as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It showed the determination of our human society, which also provided a hopeful future for our coming generations. Scientists from different disciplines accordingly have been encouraged to work together and to find viable action plans. Such a mission-oriented research field is broadly accepted as sustainability science. It is fundamentally defined by the problems that we are facing in our modern societal functions.

The earth system science is mainly composed of knowledge from lithosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere. The science therein enables us to realize the physics, chemistry, and ecology for the earth and creatures it supports. Nowadays the natural earth system encounters strong impact from human development as mentioned above. Although newly developed sustainability science has been considered to be a discipline to work on the solutions for overcoming the awkward situation, fundamental knowledge of our earth systems is still no doubt the foundation. Scientists having been long working on earth system sciences can certainly play key roles in the new approach of the sustainability science. However, a new working protocol is still needed, which is solution-oriented, nature-based, and actionable. This has been generally adopted as transdisciplinary approach. The critical insight is all knowledge bearers including the stakeholder for implementation are included in such a working team. This design is highly expected to directly apply to the end users, which would shorten the long duration of knowledge adoption in the past. It hence helps us specifically work out more sciences related to the sustainability of our future.
