In the last decade, there has been a rapid growth in collaborative and engaged modes of research in the geosciences such as coproduction, transdisciplinarity, community and citizen science. Examples of collaborative knowledge creation in practice are increasingly being documented, and there is also a burgeoning scholarship on such engaged-research modes that bring in non-academic partners into the scientific process. This increase in theory and practice of engaged and actionable geosciences is also being accompanied by slow but significant transitions in scientific institutions including funders, publishing agencies, research institutions, as well as professional societies. For instance, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) has recently created a section on “Science and Society” to promote societally-relevant, community-engaged geosciences work. These theoretical, practical and institutional learnings offer a wealth of knowledge on how to advance engagement of non-academic communities, particularly traditionally underrepresented groups, in geosciences. In this talk, I will present learnings and reflections based on my experiences in both the theory and practice of co-production of actionable geosciences, as well as my experiences as President-elect of the Science and Society section of AGU.
