Keywords:Geochemical Journal, open access, renewal

Geochemical Journal is an international journal devoted to original research papers in geochemistry and cosmochemistry. It was established in 1966 and has been published as an open access journal since 2022. It is the primary journal of the Geochemical Society of Japan. Geochemical Journal covers fields such as cosmochemistry, mineral and rock chemistry, volcanic and hydrothermal chemistry, isotope geochemistry and geochronology, atmospheric chemistry, hydrospheric and marine chemistry, organic geochemistry, and environmental chemistry. The categories of articles include Articles, Notes, Invited Reviews, Express Letters, Data, and Critical Comments, and the Data category was newly established in 2020 to meet the increasing demand for international publication of geochemical data. The editorial board consists of approximately 40 members, both Japanese and non-Japanese, who handle the submitted papers.
In January 2022, the journal underwent a major renewal as an open access journal and a new website was launched (Fig. 1: https://geochemical-journal.jp/). Since the journal is now open access, papers in the Geochemical Journal can be read by anyone in the world. The full text of the articles and PDF files are available on the J-STAGE platform.
In line with the change to an Open Access journal, an Article Processing Charge (APC) is charged to authors. For details, see the website (https://geochemical-journal.jp/pages/view/guide#section8). A special renewal discount is available until the end of 2023. There is also a discount for members and APC is free for students. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to submit your paper.
We have also substantially renewed the paper. The bottom of the first page has a "Creative Commons" copyright notice, which allows you to freely use the content within the limits of the copyright holder's permission.
The Editorial Board of the Geochemical Journal has been working to shorten the time from manuscript submission to final decision since 2020, and in 2022 the required time was 9.6 weeks, which is one of the fastest among international geochemical journals.
The Geochemical Journal Award is given to the most important paper recommended by the Editorial Board for publication in the previous year, after a vote of the Society's Committee and Board of Directors. The awardee is presented with a plaque and certificate at the Goldschmidt Conference in the same year and is eligible to give the award lecture at a session of the conference. In addition, the awardee will receive a cash prize of 100,000 JPY and a free APC for the next submission. In addition, a student paper award will be established from 2023, and will be given to the best student paper.
In line with the renewal of the website, graphic abstracts prepared by the authors are displayed on the homepage. In addition, new papers are distributed together with the graphic abstract by email. Immediately after the distribution, access to the website increases steadily, indicating that many readers view the papers as a result of the distribution.
We plan to establish a Most Cited Award within a year. We are also preparing to apply for publication in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), which is a proof of a reliable open access journal. In addition, we continue to plan special issues with the aim of improving the impact factor. We will continue our efforts to make the Geochemical Journal a platform where you can publish your research results. We look forward to receiving your submissions.
We have terminated our contract with Terra Academic Publishing, who had been our publishing contractor until the end of 2021, and we would like to express our deepest gratitude to Terra Academic Publishing for their long-term support of our publishing operations. We were awarded by JST as a supported journal by a publication consulting company. We are also grateful to INLEXIO that provides journal consulting services, for their help in preparing for Open Access and increasing the journal's presence. In particular, they gave us important advice on the creation of Instructions to Authors (https://geochemical-journal.jp/pages/view/guide). We would also like to thank Neueka Co., Ltd. for the production of the new HP and Nakanishi Publishing Company Ltd. We are grateful to them.
