[U12-P04] Current Status and Future Prospects of the Journal of the Geodetic Society of Japan - Perspectives on Utilization of Data Papers and Data Repositories
Geodesy is the science that precisely determines the shape and size of the earth, the position of the earth's surface, the earth's gravity field, and their changes over time. The Geodetic Society of Japan was founded in 1954 and is the only academic society in Japan in the field of geodesy. The Journal of the Geodetic Society of Japan, the journal of the society, was published with the establishment of the society in 1954, and was published four times a year until 2014 (~Vol. 60). From 2018 (Vol. 64~), the journal is published once a year as a printed form due to the popularity of electronic journals. The contributions are divided into the following categories: "Original papers" and “Letters" that report original research results in geodesy; "Memorial papers for Tsuboi Prize" in which the winners of the Tsuboi Prize, a prize awarded by the Society, summarize their achievements related to the prize; "Technical Reports" that contribute to technical progress in geodesy such as measurement instruments, observation methods, software, mathematical solutions, etc.; and “Review papers" that report on the latest developments in geodesy.
In recent years, there has been much discussion about the management, storage, and sharing of research data, the establishment of data journals, and the development of data repositories. In the field of geodesy, the GGOS (Global Geodetic Observing System) Japan Data DOI Subcommittee, a regional organization of the GGOS established under the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), has proposed the management, storage, and utilization of geodetic data.
In response to these developments, the Editorial Committee and the Data Working Group have expanded the category of "Databases and Documentation" to "Databases, Documentation, and Data Papers" in 2022, and established a system for accepting data papers. In addition, the construction of the Geodetic Society of Japan Data System has begun with the aim of collecting data in the field of geodesy and assigning DOIs to them.
The presentation will include an overview of the Journal of the Geodetic Society of Japan, an introduction to these recent developments, and a discussion of future issues and prospects.
