[O-05] Stationary linear rain band: its generation mechanism, prediction and disaster mitigation
Sun. May 26, 2024 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM Exhibition Hall Special Setting (1) (Exhibition Hall 6, Makuhari Messe)
convener:Koji Sassa(Natural Science Cluster, Kochi University), Akira Wada(Tokyo Institute of Technology), Takahiro Sayama(Kyoto University), Yoshinori MIYACHI(Geological Survey of Japan, AIST), Chairperson:Koji Sassa(Natural Science Cluster, Kochi University)

Torrential rain events have caused flood and sediment disasters every year. Recently, we have heard the word 'Senjyo Kousuitai,' i. e., stationary linear rain bands frequently. How do ordinary citizens and local communities understand such word? In order to prepare the prevention plan for the disasters due to Senjyo Kousuitai and to adapt to climate change in the future, it is essential for us to understand such phenomena correctly and to spread the knowledge about them.
What is Senjyo kousuitai? Where and how do such phenomena occur? Does the terrain affect such phenomena? Will global warming intensify and increase such phenomena? What kind of disasters will occur when large amounts of rain fall locally in a short period of time? In this session, the state-of-the-art research in meteorology on the mechanisms and predictions of Senjyo Kousuitai will be explained easily. We will review the current state of research and also discuss the change in risk of flood and sediment disasters due to torrential rain and the key points of early warning and evacuation. At the end of the session, general discussion will open to share the knowledge about Senjyo Kousuitai and related disasters. Then we welcome the participation of all people who are interested in Senjyo Kousuitai and related disasters, including the general public.
