[O-09] Mechanism of the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake and its disaster
Sat. May 25, 2024 1:45 PM - 3:15 PM Convention Hall (CH-B) (International Conference Hall, Makuhari Messe)
Chairperson:Atsuko Nonomura(Kagawa University), Kazuo Tamura, Takashi Azuma(National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology), Dan Matsumoto(National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology)
We believe the Earth is stable, but sometimes it causes huge disasters to human life. The Noto-Hanto Earthquake (M 7.6) and tsunami occurred in the evening on the first day of the new year in 2024 when people had a peaceful time with their families. Houses, buildings, and constructions were destroyed and damaged by strong grand motions, tsunamis, slope failures, and liquefactions. Electric power and water supply were shut down for a long time. These situations made rescue and support operations difficult. In this session, we discuss the mechanism of the 2024 Noto-Hanto Earthquake and its disasters, as well as how earth science would contribute to earthquake disaster mitigation.
