Global-scale issues that earth and planetary science researchers must confront and contribute to society are rapidly increasing, such as the intensification of weather disasters in recent years, the increase in disaster risks associated with large-scale earthquakes and tsunamis, and food security and environmental issues. These issues require cooperation among researchers, engineers, and policy makers in various fields. In addition to international collaboration in each specialized field, cooperation with the national academies of each country is also indispensable to tackle global-scale issues. The Science Council of Japan (SCJ), Japan's national academy, has been reforming its international activities, expression of will and scientific advisory function, information dissemination capability, transparency of the membership selection process, and enhancement of secretariat functions, as part of its "Toward a Better Exercise of Role" in the wake of the refusal to appoint members in 2020. In the 26th term starting in October 2023, the "Earth and Planetary Science Committee" will be composed of 10 members in order to be able to respond flexibly to changing circumstances, and affiliated members will work in subcommittees and subcommittees with clearly defined specific roles. In this session, we would like to discuss the cooperation and collaboration with the Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU) and other academic societies, as well as the division of roles, for the promotion of science and dissemination of knowledge.
