This presentation is to explain the recreational scuba-diving program “Space Diving” which simulates the moon environment underwater. Its purpose is to accelerate both technologies of human space flight and scuba-diving in Japan through its physical experience. Targets will be all individuals 1. who are aiming to become an astronaut assigned from national organization or enterprises, 2. who are willing to join the space tourism, 3. who are engaged in space industries, 4. who are curious in science especially in physics of underwater and space, 5. who are looking forward to challenge something new. Amazingly it is easy to simulate one sixth gravity just by diving into the ocean. No need to construct gorgeous facilities. All you need is to gear up yourselves with dive equipment. During this program, there will be several missions. Sampling, Navigation, Documentation, and Rescue. And these missions are divided in 3 levels. Level 1 is for beginners who already have the Open Water Diver certification. Level 2 is for Advanced open water diver, and Level 3 is for rescue diver. These levels follow the guidelines of PADI which is the world’s largest ocean exploration and divers organization. PADI was established at 1960s just after NAUI was established, which is the oldest diving organization, and these two had been contributed to NASA to enhance the technologies of human space flight since then. Therefore, the methods of NASA astronaut training program were basically originated from PADI and NAUI, especially from their safety regulations and educations. According to these historical back grounds, Space diving will follow PADI guideline in order to be guaranteed its safety. While this course was created as a recreation program, it is planned to proceed some scientific experiment. We would like to reveal how scuba diving training would be valuable for astronaut and we are preparing to focus on stress resistance. Ocean and space are literally not the same but both of them are the extreme environment. Divers and astronauts cannot survive without the usage of life support equipment and one mistake leads easily to death. These are stressful and when they cannot deal with it, they will get panic and may not control themselves. Therefore, stress resistance is worth researching. Still this course needs test operations, this research will be done down the road. Through this course, I hope all students will experience how is like to be an astronaut and this course will be evaluated as one of the certification standards for future human space society.
