[HDS09-P12] An attempt of rapid 3D modelling of collapsed slopes using low-cost mobile LiDAR and SLAM technology

Keywords:mobile LiDAR, SLAM, 3D mapping, landslide

As methods to determine the shape of landslide, cross-sectional profiling using laser rangefinder and 3D mapping using UAV-SfM are commonly used. LiDAR-UAV provides more detailed 3D point cloud data and DTM, but the equipments are generally very expensive. In addition, there are many issues to consider when flying UAV, such as the safety of the surrounding and legal restrictions.
In this study, I attempted to acquire 3D point cloud and create DTM using a low-cost mobile LiDAR scanner and SLAM technology (LiDAR-SLAM) as a quick and easy method of measuring collapsed slope. The LiDAR-SLAM DTM was as accurate as the UAV-SfM DSM in the unvegetated landslide source and runoff area. However, the point clouds were easily lost due to laser shadowing in areas with thick vegetation or on the uneven sediments. There were some points for improvement, such as appropriate route planning.
