Keywords:Disaster risk perception, Disaster experience, The 2004 Sumatra earthquake, Banda Aceh
Very few built environments, except for a few intentionally preserved monuments or heritages, remind us of the past tragedy in Banda Aceh that was severely devastated by the tunami waves following the 2004 Sumatra earthquake. According to our questionnaire survey that was conducted in January 2023, it was only 25.2% of all the respondents to answer "much" to the question, to what degree a tidal weve disaster would occur in the near future, even 53.2% of the respondents living in former affected coastal communities. This fact shows that it is quite difficult to succeed the lessons of the past disaster experiences for longer terms. In this paper, we analyze changing community risk percentions toward natural disasters in Banda Aceh and discuss their factors related to urban developments in the post-disaster period, referring to the results of our past several questionnaire surveys.
