Vietnam has continued to enjoy steady economic growth in the Asian region, but on the other hand, this has meant that it has been included in globalization, and at the national level, there has been a shift away from traditional agricultural production and modernization of lifestyles. It can be said that they have been forced to undergo such changes.
Under these circumstances, ethnic minorities such as the Hmong and Giao people in Sapa T.X (Lao Cai province) in northern Vietnam have shown population growth of 3% per year since the 1980s, despite living in mountainous areas, and since the 2010s The number of rice terraces continues to increase in mountainous regions.
In this report, we clarify the current situation of rice terrace expansion in this area, and examine why they continue to increase their number of rice terraces, and whether these rice terraces are sustainable from an environmental and socio-economic perspective.
