The southern slope of the Mt. Izumigatake (1172m) in the Funagata Mountain Range, Northeast Japan had suffered various field resource use such as weeding and grazing. The past field resource use sometimes accompanied by burning caused the vegetation change froms natural broadleaf forests into the landscape of wide grassland and scattered bare ground where surface erosion was active. Although the results of comparison of aerial photos taken in different years and field survey of vegetation and landform suggest that the secondary succession has progressed during the past several decades, the still-remained tiny bare ground and surrounding vegetation represent the negatinve effects of the past field resource use.
