[MIS21-P04] On large-scale vortex formation in three-dimensional rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection

Hirofumi Sasaki1, *Shin-ichi Takehiro1, Michio Yamada1 (1.Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto University)

Keywords:rotating fluid, thermal convection, coherent vortex

Numerical experiments of rapidly rotating three dimensional Rayleigh-Benard convection are performed with the larger horizontal computational domains. There emerges horizontally one positive large-scale vortex in the domain after the initial development of thermal convection. As the horizontal scale of the computational domain is increased, mean kinetic energy at the final state is increased and the large-scale vortex extends horizontally. Its horizontal extent reaches about half of the computational domain. Many strong positive small-scale vorticity patches exist inside the large-scale vortex, while there are both the positive and negative small-scale vorticity patches outside the large-scale vortex.
