[MZZ41-P06] ‘Anthropocene’ in the Regions: A History of Regional Geographies Written by Humanistic Geologists in Japan
Keywords:Anthropocene, regional geography, humanistic geologist, history of geoscience, totality of region
How should we change the way of regional geography writings in the age of 'Anthropocene'? We would like to propose a revision of historiography in the history of geoscience in Japan based on the recent research about the work of the geologist Mochizuki Katsumi (1905-1963), who had an idea of constructing the totality of region through cultural regional geography including historical geotectonics. First, we review the history of regional geographies 1889-1915 written by humanistic geologists such as Koto Bunjiro (1856-1935), Jimbo Kotora (1867-1924), Ogawa Takuji (1870-1941), Yamasaki Naomasa (1870-1929) and Sato Denzo (1870-1928), who summarized the geography writiings under the triad of natural geography, human geography, and regional geography. Then, we treat with the more specified regional geoscientific writings 1914-1958 by such geologists as Yabe Hisakatsu (1878-1969), Nakamura Shintaro (1881-1941), Tayama Risaburo (1897-1952), Tanakadate Hidezo (1884-1951), and Mochizuki Katsumi. In these works, as we see both elements of geological and human history, one may take these examples to reconsider or reintegrate the geoscientific practices by grasping the totality of every region under Anthropocenic issues.
