The novel "Sora Wataru Kyoshitsu" is a story about the year-long activities of a newly formed science club at an evening high school in Tokyo. The characters in the club are of different ages and backgrounds, and begin their activities with insufficient knowledge and interest in science. The advisor, Fujitake, a science teacher, uses some experiments that have been conducted in the past as "Kitchen Earth Science" as the first subjects for the students to experience science through hands-on activities (convection experiment using miso soup, earthquake model experiment using bekko-ame, analog experiment using sushi vinegar and baking soda to simulate volcanic explosion, etc.). This novel was written being inspired by the activities of the science club of an actual evening high school in Osaka. In this talk, I will introduce the background of the writing process, my intention of featuring "Kitchen Earth Science" in the work, and the response from general readers including junior and senior high school students.
