[O08-P46] Processes of formation and destruction of the sea bream shaped islands
On the coast of southern Wakayama Prefecture, various landforms have been formed by weathering and erosion. The formation of plate-like islands, one of them, is thought to be greatly influenced by wave erosion and the direction of joints in the strata. In order to examine the common features and origins of the topography, we used topographic maps and aerial photographs to observe the arrangement and shape of the islands. Characteristic erosional topography has developed in the Neogene conglomerate beds, and the direction of the joints is predominantly north-northwest to south-southeast. This structure may reflect the movement of the Philippine Sea plate, which is subducting from the Nankai Trough beneath the Kii Peninsula.
