[PEM15-07] EISCAT and EISCAT_3D – An update on the road ahead

★Invited Papers

*Axel Steuwer1 (1.EISCAT Scientific Association)

Keywords:incoherent scatter radar, ionosphere, EISCAT

The EISCAT Scientific Association owns and operates several incoherent scattering radar systems in the Nordics. It is currently constructing a new generation of incoherent scattering radar system called EISCAT_3D based on phased array technology. The EISCAT_3D system represents a major step forward in terms of research infrastructure for investigating the coupling between the Earth's upper atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere in a key region of geospacer and allow in particular volumetric measurements.
The radar will also be located in the auroral regions of the Nordics as the old EISCAT system, and will, once completed, replace the old EISCAT system. At the same time, EISCAT will become a company owned by the Nordic host countries. This talk will discuss in greater detail the status of the EISCAT_3D implementation, the initial and expanded capabilities planned for the system, as well as the schedule for making the radar available to the research community via that company.
