[SGL17-02] What does the error in the age mean in the dating?

*Ichiro Kaneoka1 (1.Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo)

Keywords:dating, error in the age, error in the measurement, uncertainty

It is very common that an age obtained by a dating method is accompanied with an error. However, the meaning of error is not always clearly defined and it depends on the kind of dating method. As a result, we sometimes observe such a case that about a dated value it is discussed in details too much and the age value is often referred without any error, which might cause confusion in the discussion. To remove such a case, it important to understand the meaning of an error attached to a dated age value.
Normally, the error in an age obtained by dating represents the error in the measurement caused during the analytical processes to obtain each data datum to calculate an age, but does not include those elements which might be necessary to be considered to evaluate the reliability of an age value to represent the time of some event which is a main concern for a researcher to apply for the event. To evaluate an age,the required data depend on the kind od dating method and each error associated with each datum is summarized with the use of of a rule on the propagation of error to estimate the error in the obtained age.
In my talk, I will introduce some cases in more details by showing examples and discuss the importance to evaluate the reliability of a dated value by considering both the error in the measurement and those errors not included in the measurement such as the conditions of the used samples for dating and so on.
