[SSS05-P04] Visualization Model of Focal Mechanism Solution

*Masato Ikura1, Naofumi Aso1 (1.Tokyo University of Science)

Keywords:seismology, focal mechanism, beach ball

Double-couple focal mechanisms has been described by “beach balls” that corresponds to polarity of P-waves. However, it is not intuitive for people other than skilled seismologists to read the beach balls of focal mechanisms and to imagine the movement of faults. The purpose of this research is to build a three-dimensional schematic model of the beach ball that we can intuitively associate beach balls with the fault motion. In this model, we install a seismic source sphere with four colored quadrants and rotate it by each of the three fault parameters, which represents the corresponding focal mechanism solution. We confirm the accuracy of this model by comparing the produced beach balls with two complementary sets of fault parameters for several moment tensor solutions, including the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.
